The Academy of Theatre and Dance is managed by the director. The director is ultimately responsible for the entire organization: for both artistic and business organizational policy and results.
The director reports to the Executive Board of the Amsterdam University of the Arts and works closely with the Management Consultation, which meets biweekly.
The director has delegated responsibility for the quality and development of education to the artistic directors of the various programs.
The programs are divided into three domains: Dance, Theatre, and Masters (DAS):
- Dance: National Ballet Academy (Associate Degree in Classical Ballet and Classical Ballet Teacher), School for New Dance Development (SNDO), Dance Teacher (DD), Expanded Contemporary Dance (ECD).
- Theatre: Amsterdam School of Drama & Cabaret (ATKA), Mime, Directing, Theatre Teacher (including a shortened version), Scenography, Design, and Technology (D&T), and Production and Performing Arts (OPP).
- Masters: DAS Theater, DAS Choreography, and DAS Creative Producing.
Each domain is chaired by a domain chair.
The Management Meeting consists of the director and the chairs of the three domains, as well as the head of operations, the head of quality and policy (also acting as academy secretary), and the executive assistant. In the management meeting, cross-program or cross-departmental topics relevant to programs, education, operations, or policy development are discussed. Topics can be put on the agenda of the domains or departments during the management meeting, or can be put on the agenda of domains or other departments by the members of the management meeting. The domain chairs do not supervise the other artistic directors within their domain.
In domain meetings, the artistic directors discuss artistic policy, education, and current affairs within their domain (but sometimes also across domains). Sometimes the meetings are held jointly with the domains, and sometimes with the director. If relevant, the artistic directors of the master's programs, the professor, or members of the Operations or Policy Teams will be present.
The Operational ManagementTeam, which meets biweekly and is responsible for daily operations, consists of heads and staff members who support the director and the artistic directors. The Quality & Policy Team advises on educational policy and student well-being. The team meets biweekly.
The director meets biweekly with the directors of other faculties and the Executive Board in the AHK Strategic Consultation.
With representation from lecturers, staff, and students, the director consults with various participation bodies: the Academy Council and the Program Committees for each domain.
